How many bandidos died in the milperra massacre
Brothers in Arms is the story of the lead up, reasons and the repercussions of the "Milperra Massacre" where two warring Motorcycle Clubs faced off in the car park of a western Sydney pub on Fathers Day, The two clubs, the Bandidos, and the Comancheros were once under one club, only to later split, which then caused a rift that would lead to many deaths. Whilst the show is "based" on real events, there are inaccuracies that can easily be ignored and give the viewer an insight into not only the bikie biker culture, but also one of the worst massacres in Australian history.
The series tells the true story of the Milperra massacre, when the Bandidos and the Comancheros motorcycle clubs went to war on Father's Day, Sunday 2 September The massacre had its beginnings after a group of Comancheros broke away and formed the first Bandidos Motorcycle Club chapter in Australia.
This resulted in intense rivalry between the two chapters. At a public swap meet at the Viking Hotel at Milperra, a brief but violent battle ensued with seven people shot dead, including a 14 year old innocent bystander. A further 28 people were wounded with 20 requiring hospitalisation. I lost four good men and we got totally screwed. I was the one who ended up being shot up, so how could I have killed anyone? Milperra changed everything.
Former CIB superintendent Ross Stephenson, who had retired from the police force by , dismissed arguments by the gangs that there was no intention to start an all-out war at the tavern. They had declared war on each other, and once that happens you can be assured a full-scale battle will take place if they meet in public. I was very fearful for my own safety.
In , Channel 10 aired a six-part miniseries entitled Bikie Wars: Brothers In Arms about the build up to the massacre, the incident itself and the characters involved. He told The Sunday Telegraph he was concerned about how his daughter — who was at the bike swap meet with a friend of his — would be portrayed. To join the conversation, please log in. The judge was perplexed by how offenders he described as good family men could behave with such violence when they were with their bikie gang mates. All the murder verdicts were quashed and replaced with manslaughter convictions by the Court of Criminal Appeal. Annakin, Heeney and Hennessey were released in December Kucler got out in September and Ross in January , having served little more than five years.
Six bikies and a year-old girl were shot dead in the Milperra Massacre in Throughout the sentence hearing, I sought a greater understanding than I was able to obtain of the nature of the clubs and the relationship between their respective members. There was, I thought, a very good reason for that. Some are in their thirties and forties, have no significant prior convictions and have good family and work backgrounds. I felt that there had to be some explanation for the marked and perplexing difference between their behaviour in other contexts.
I also wanted to know more about the clubs themselves and what it is about the way of life that they offer that led these people, many of whom would in all other respects be regarded as law-abiding and responsible citizens of commendable character, to indulge in what on the face of it is irresponsible, anti-social behaviour of extreme violence, bringing with it obvious danger to human live, and in the facts of this case, the tragic consequences of seven deaths.
It is not possible to sit looking at these men for more than one year, as I have a done, without feeling that there is more to them than the popular image of bikie gang members. It is unfortunate that so many of them have chosen to play no part in the sentence hearing, although years of their lives are at stake. A fierce loyalty and a propensity for violence, which rightly or wrongly typify the popular image of such clubs are clearly indicated by the almost intimidatory appearance adopted, and the emphasis on strength and power to be found in man and machine alike.
A need to belong and enjoy a close relationship and bond with others can be readily understood. So can a pride in physical strength and courage.
But like most admirable qualities, these can be carried to excess. The ugly side to loyalty seems to demand enemies against whom the loyal can be united and the ugly side to physical strength and courage is when when violence is unleashed against those enemies. When you have two groups like these in conflict with one another, a 'Viking' is always likely. As patriotism can lead to jingoism and mateship can lead to cronyism, so bikie club loyalty, it seems, can lead to bikie club war.
In assessing sentence, it is appropriate to treat all the offences of which any accused was convicted of as part of the one transaction. It is proper to have regard to the totality of the criminal conduct of which each had been convicted and then sentence accordingly.
The fact that seven people were killed is itself a significant, aggravating circumstance as is the fact that there were hundreds of people whose lives were put at risk.
