How many shad per gallon

Next you need a pump to fill and drain the tank, I use a rule and about 15 foot of bilge hose, just drop the pump in the lake to fill and drop the pump in the tank to drain it.

Some tanks have a drain in them but it is a bad idea to drain saltwater into your boat. Next is a plastic wash tub from the dollar store which will be used for culling and counting bait as you move them to the tank plus gizzard shad should never be put directly into a tank because they need to go into the tub first so the excess slim can wash off.

With the tub you can easily dump out your net without putting unnecessary stress on the bait. Fill the tub about half full and keep the water clean. Always fill your tank before you start catching bait and add a hand full of stock salt for every 10 gallons of water in the tank. You can get a thermometer at any pet store. Remember ice has chlorine so you need to treat the tank with Sure-Life Better Bait. I only use the Better Bait if I have to ice the water or when keeping bait over night.

The million dollar question is how many shad should you put in the tank and there are way to many variables to figure that out but inch baits in a 50 gallon tank is about the edge , you can always keep them better in the spring and fall but really you will just have to find your limits for your set up, watch your bait close at first and if the bait is swimming low in the tank you should be good but if they are swimming close to the top you might want to pull some out and cut them into chum.

Here is another thing you can learn the easy way or the hard way, when leaving bait unattended at night always use 2 sources of aeration because pumps sometimes burn out or get clogged, the best thing for back up is a aquarium pump with a good diffuser stone and always leave the lid open enough to get fresh air into the tank but watch out for birds getting bait out of your tank and if there is a way for it to get in you could end up with a snake in your tank ,snakes love shad.

Call Capt Steve Posted in Articles. I tried tfd's super water mix and all. All I can say is, I need to buy a superbaittank II. Could've saved a lot of money, time, and headaches by just buying the super bait tank II to begin with. I got mine at a tackle shop in cumming Georgia.

When I called the guy that sells super bait tanks online he told me there was like a 3 month wait. The tackle shop in cumming had them in stock. Oh and my 50 gallon tank holds a bunch of bait, on a typical summer day I have about 4 to 6 inch gizzard shad and a dozen or so 8 to 12 inch gizzard shad in my tank and they are all very healthy. The fish I like to catch laugh at threadfins in the summer. It is not uncommon to catch a 15 pounder on a bait that weighs a pound or more. They just ignore small baits in the summer. Why have 10 dozen inch gizzards then? Threadfins are usually inch in the dead heat of summer and seem to Me to be preferred by stripers. They are brighter and flashier and every bit as lively if taken good care of. I get ate about twice as much on threadfin over gizzards. I guess that on the coosa Gizzards may be easier to find than threadfins.?.? Or am I missing something else? I now live closer to the Coosa than the Tennessee so I'm gonna have to learn to fish it. How many shad?

Thread starter dphillipx Start date Sep 20, What is the maximum number of shad per gallon of container? I have airator with constant fresh pump BradMyers Gone but not forgotten Sep 20, My 40 gal. Don't forget the salt , one cup per 10gal of NON iodized ice cream salt. A tablespoon of bait saver for the whole tank. I can keep 5 inch threadfins alive in my home built 35 gallon tank but I keep my filtration and aerator systems runing constant!!

Remember you want the shad to all go one way! And you wAnt the water temp to stay clean and cold like around 60 degrees when the weather is hot and the same temp of tje lake water when it's cold!

I keep gizzards alive in my tank doing the same method as my threads. AStrick Senior Member Sep 20, Nothing less than 30 gal.

If you have a constant fresh water pump running all your bait is going to die.
